The Swan Escapes Again

A True Story

by Helen Torr

Across the road, there is a swan
Who lives happily alone
With all the ducks and many birds
That call the Valley Park home.

One day I heard a commotion
So I ran to the pond nearby;
With a flapping and a beating of wings
The swan had decided to fly!

Children were squealing with laughter
At the swan that had just escaped,
But he never flies too far away
He just heads back to the gate.

For this is where he knows
Someone will let him back in
To the pond, which is his domain,
And where he likes to swim.

The swan escapes quite often
And yet he seems to know
How much we all do love him
And we’d be sad to see him go.

So, he has a quick look ’round
And maybe a bite to eat,
Then when he returns home — with some help —
He settles down for a nice, long sleep.
