Sophia Shingle’s Tea Party

by Jason Kirk Bartley

Sophia Shingle was ready to mingle,
as she brought out four plates at her ripe age of eight.
Setting up a play table and a few chairs,
she was accompanied with two dark-haired dollies
and some stuffed, dark brown teddy bears.
They’d keep her company with her table all spread —
chocolate chip cookies, the bears and dollies were fed,
‘till from a teapot she poured each one his and her tea.
All of the neighbors watched her with such glee.
She was a neighborhood attraction!
Many uninvited guests like her brother and his friends,
the temptations they could not endure
of trying to behead her dollies,
and pluck out her bears’ fur …
Sophia became angry, her face was a tint of red.
Yelling and screaming, she could’ve awakened the dead.
The party was being crashed by these mischievous ones …
to them it was getting even and just having fun.
‘Till Sophia had had all that she could stand —
she went in and grabbed her daddy’s hand.
But the boys just fled the scene —
for today, they were done being mean.
It would be a sure grounding if they were caught doing these things.
They’d surely be disciplined with the lesson it brings.
Or maybe they’d stand in the corner,
or must do Sophia’s chores …
Next time she’d have the tea party
in her bedroom and lock all the doors.
