Nineteen Stars

by Anna Roberts

With every crocheted star I threaded
onto the rough, brown twine above my bed,
I thought of another — the one
that hung above Jesus’ bed,
beckoning the wise men to come and see.
From its spot in the star-freckled night,
it lit the wild ways and paths,
but my stars can only be seen
by light. And though the Bethlehem Star
would have made visible mine of burnt orange and brown,
even it is dim compared to the Eternal
Star that lit the first day of creation
and will light the day when time slips into eternity.
