New Beginnings

by Emily Brown, age 17

Like rain must have seemed to Noah —
Or pain to Eve —
Like Adam’s feet must have felt,
Knowing that he had to leave.

Like death must have been to Abel —
Or murder, to Cain.
The garden, now become a fable,
Their greed, their Eden’s bane.

Like ending, to Methuselah,
His time to leave behind
A world he had seen so much of,
For a world he hoped to find.

Like childbirth to Sarah,
Or fatherhood to one
Who feared he’d have no children …
When God gave Abraham a son.

Like a rain-made bow to triplets,
Facing the sky,
A covenant of light and colour
From their God, who did not lie.

Like hope to Gentile nations —
A child King —
Who rescued many peoples
Through pain and suffering.

Like life brought forth from death,
Adopted sons —
For all those born again,
Though many, become one.

Life is full of new beginnings,
Since its very dawn;
Every time the sun comes ’round
To bring to us the morn.

Like rain must have seemed to Noah —
At last the proof
That every step he took in faith
Was walking towards Truth.
