My Flower Garden
by Phoebe Hernandez, age 13
Dew on the grass shining like the sun
Petals of every color as soft as tissue
The freshly fallen rain with the aroma
of hidden angels giving me refreshment
I start to ramble how the day has been going
and express my feelings to them
Grief, anger, joy, and love; on and on I go
They don’t shun or judge
just listen and sway in the wind
Then I wake up from the flower garden
in my mind
But they wait patiently
‘Till I drift off to sleep and join them again

Our American Flag
by Phoebe Hernandez, age 13
Crimson red reflecting the power and brave spirit of our soldiers
who were forced to lay down on blood-stained ground
Pure satin white for America’s valor and well-deserved honor
Navy blue warning us to be fair and prudent, for one day we’ll care
Majestically flaps our three colored flag
with fifty white stars because of our fifty United States
Thirteen stripes red and white for our originals when they fight
Watching over us, she did war after war alongside our Lord Christ
She gave her men courage as they fought for their nation
Like the stars at night, her stars will shine
Hold Old Glory up, not down; not to touch the ground
but what a sight to see, our American flag fly free
