Mudpies and Country Life
by Clara Klein
Cows and pigs and fields of corn
In the heart of the land where food is born
Big red barns and silos of grain
Spot the landscape on a rural lane.
Garden patches tilled by hand
With peas, cabbage, and tomatoes grand
Pulling a weed, sprinkling chicken feed
These are jobs for a little one.
We gently gather eggs and pick fruit from the trees
Then Mom makes an apple pie to please
While down in the meadow, the horses gallop
We make our own butter and drink milk straight up!
The kids make mud pies while Dad waters the crops
The long walk to the neighbors has lots of stops
A ride on the tractor is the treat of the day
With a bottle of pop, we laugh all the way.
Fresh air and sunshine and buzzing bees
The smell of hay to make you sneeze
Kittens on fence posts, things that I love most
Out in the country is where I want to be.
We run around the fields
Until the sun yields
And with the critters in their lairs
We say our bedtime prayers.
Life on the farm’s
The way to raise your kids
To learn about life
Like your grandfolks did.
