Going Out on a Limb
by Pat Severin
A fairy prince sat on a limb
and contemplated life.
“There’s something that I’m wishing for,
I want a fairy wife.”
The limb was swaying back and forth
as gentle breezes blew,
and as they did, the fairy prince
hoped she’d be kind and true.
He thought about it day and night.
This was the prince’s quest:
“I’ve got to find my fairy mate,
my tiny fair princess.”
Then suddenly, out of the blue,
to his complete surprise,
a little fairy lit below,
falling from the skies.
She looked up at the little prince
and smiled bashfully,
“I had a dream,” she said to him,
“That you were seeking me!”
“My dream has led me to this branch
on which I sit below
and if you’d care to join me here,
the two of us, I know …
“… could go through life, just you and me,
flying side by side.
On lazy days, we’ll ask a lark
to give us both a ride.
“We’ll sleep amidst the flowers
and we’ll bathe in morning dew.
We’ll never, ever lonely be,
forever, me and you.”
The prince was sure he’d found his wife,
his wings lit up like fire!
He flew below and settled on
that branch and sat beside her.
They fluttered wings and talked for hours.
Their day had been the best!
The prince’s wish was granted
for he’d found his true princess!
The two were married ‘neath the stars
and when their love was blessed,
the preacher said, “Now I present
our fairy prince and princess.”
So hand and hand they went through life
with fewer tears than laughter.
The fairy prince and his princess
lived happily ever after!
