‘Caterpillar’ and ‘Feel’ — Two Poems by Kaylah Ortega (age 12)

< Back to Issue #9

Caterpillar

by Kaylah Ortega, age 12

Crawling on the damp leaves
Already done munching, it seems
Toxic plants do not faze them
Eerie shuffling will come
Remarkable growth over time
Putting itself in the form of slime
It prepares itself for a change
Looking kinda strange
Lying down for a rest
At death, the nutrients open like a chest
Reborn, no longer a pest

Feel

by Kaylah Ortega, age 12

I feel calm
I feel happy
I feel the cold water to my waist
I feel Jesus on my side
Watching me with pride
As I feel my falling back
I think of my little shack
Back at home in Monrovia
And back at Covina
As I’m coming up
I think of what Jesus did in my life
And that I have a new life
