‘What I Would’ and ‘Come Run with Me, My Friend’ — Two Poems by Edy Blamires (age 15)

What I Would

by Edy Blamires, age 15

I wish to hear the wind
Whispering my name
To the daisies and the poppies
That grow under the sun.

I wish to see the trees
And the grasses and the bees
Hold a conference in the grove
And kindly speak of me.

Too often, I feel,
Is my name spoken wrong,
And far too much affiliated
With the demure and calm.

For, I would, if I could,
Go splashing in the brooks,
Race wild across the meadows,
And dance with the moon and sun.

I would laugh with the skies
And leap and jest and play,
And I would have no solemn thought
Chase my dear fun away.

Come Run with Me, My Friend

by Edy Blamires, age 15

Come running with me through fields of gold,
Those who be my friends.
Come chasing the colorful bird of thought
That traps us in a trance.
Across boundless skies shall we leap and glide,
We shall play ’mongst clouds of snow
And listen to the meadowlark as it sings of grace and home.

We’ll race against the thickening rains,
Burning laughter all the way.
We’ll dance to the rhythm of the sunset’s palette,
Beside those poppies spun with rays.
We’ll rejoice, and we’ll celebrate the grandeur of our Lord,
And with tranquility, rest our wearied souls.
We shall leave the world behind and converse with something more,
And we shall live in a harmony, serene,
As with angels, we run and leap.
