A Congregation of Umbrellas

by Marcia N. Lynch

A congregation of umbrellas
Wait with folded wings,
Dripping in the narthex
While the church choir sings.

Leaning there like dominoes
In the cloakroom hall,
They dream of shiny puddles
As outside, raindrops fall.

The drooping, glistening leaves,
The rhythm of the drops,
The splash of windshield wipers
In the parking lot.

Yearning for the wet world,
The moist and fragrant air,
Eager for their masters
To retrieve them there.

Waiting for their hinged spokes
To stretch and spread again,
And to share the wonder
Of God’s gentle rain.
