“The Hobby Horse,” read by Jason Kirk Bartley.
The Hobby Horse
by Jason Kirk Bartley
I had an appaloosa
mother had bought me from the local toy store.
It was my favorite toy;
I’d bounce on him forever and ever more.
Pretending to be the Lone Ranger,
with my cowboy hat, toy gun at my side,
I’d hop on my appaloosa
and pretend to take a ride.
Playing cowboys and Indians,
No one would mess with me — they did not dare.
I’d find and rescue all the maidens;
they were so fair.
I’d ride
with such zeal.
I’d bounce and bounce
as if my horse were real.
Bouncing on my hobby horse,
I’d be in shootouts with desperados all the same,
just like I was the town’s sheriff
going after Jesse James.
The banditos knew who upheld the law,
so they had to stay clean.
I was the fastest gunslinger
the West had ever seen.
