Imagining What Happened to My Lost Birthday Card with Money

by Morgan Carlock Clark

Perhaps a child, let’s say a boy, eight years old,
picks it off the ground and pockets it.
How it arrived there isn’t important
since the boy just accepts that it did, so it’s his.
It’s as if a dog wandered into his yard
with a frayed collar and no owner’s name.
He has no way or desire to return it, so he removes
and disposes of the collar. He forges
a new name for the dog, rewriting its destiny,
and he spends the enclosed money on football cards
while the washing machine smudges the words into oblivion.
