Grocery Shopping

by Pat Severin

I love to shop for groceries.
The supermarket’s cool!
Mom tells me things about the store —
It’s kinda like in school.

I point at all the things I like.
“Let’s buy it,” I insist.
But Mom says that we’ve got to stick
to what is on the list.

You might think I would want to buy
the candy. There’s all kinds.
I’d rather have an orange, but, Mom,
would you remove the rinds?

My favorite fruits are raspberries
and pineapple is yummy,
or broccoli that’s dipped in ranch …
I like that in my tummy!

Though other kids prefer dessert
and junk food by the score,
I’d rather have green vegetables —
One bite and I want more.

I guess that I’m a lot like Mom,
for salad’s what I’d choose.
Put tasty dressing on the top
and I know I can’t lose.

I may not be like other kids
who crave what may be sweet.
No, I’d choose fruit or vegetables,
‘cause that’s my kind of treat!
