A New Song

by Marcia N. Lynch

“Sing a new song!” Oh, what can I sing?
Of mountains and forests and flappidy things?
A new song of heaven? A new song of earth?
A song of redemption? A song of new birth?
How can I sing a new song to the One
Who knows every thought, every word on my tongue?
I’ll praise Him with songs like the creatures He loves!
The bray of the donkey, the moan of the dove,
The purr of the kitten, the screech of the hawk,
The honk of the gosling, the quack of the duck,
The bellowing hippo, the buzz of the bee!
I’ll praise him in English or Vietnamese!
Farsi or Dutch, whatever will please
The LORD God who made me, along with all these.
The LORD God who hears every hoot, every word —
“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!”

About the Poet

Marcia N. Lynch’s experience as a storyteller comes from working as a children’s film editor and from having been written into the story of Christ’s redemption. She studied sculpture at Mount Holyoke College. Sculpting, like film editing, requires an artist to cut out anything that does not relate to the primary subject matter, and these two disciplines have honed her storytelling skills. Marcia lives in Arlington, Virginia with her husband of 38 years and has three grown children. She surrendered to Christ in 1975.
