No Longer Bound

by Phoebe Hernandez (age 14)

I skipped through the day
As if I carried no pain
Always masking a smile

But I carried a storm
One that ruthlessly tore
While the ocean tossed me side to side

Choking salt from my throat
The icy sea gripped my clothes
Making me gasp for breath

Fear snatched my fainting soul
A frigid chill went through my bones
Suddenly, there came an unnatural silence

The sea enticed me to follow
She coaxed, โ€œYouโ€™ll never get hurt.โ€
As I felt sharp chains pulling me down

My pride began to fade
I feebly cried for aid
Then a hand drew me out of the storm

The ocean was calm, full of light
And there I saw my Lord Christ
Who shattered my piercing chains

He pulled me into his arms
Where there was no harm
Asked, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you call my name?โ€

What I failed to see
He wanted me free
Now Iโ€™m no longer bound
