Wild Thoughts at the Beach

by Emma-Jane Peterson

I’ll imagine my feet might slither on rocks,
Like the snake I once held at the zoo.
But in truth, I’m still safe, my sneakers grip hard,
With God, I tame fear — you can too.

I’ll imagine this wild wind is too blustery,
Like Grandpa, when he seems a bit cross.
But in truth, I won’t blow over, I’m certain,
Both my legs feel as strong as an ox.

I’ll imagine noisy waves crashing into me,
Like a plate clattering onto stone tiles.
But in truth, the ocean skips as though dancing,
I hear splish-splashing songs for miles.

I’ll imagine the light-house bulb flickers, then fails,
Like the blackout that made me afraid.
But in truth, it beams through fog, a bright beacon,
Like Jesus — to whom I have prayed.
