They Call Him Johnny Baseball
by Jason Kirk Bartley
They call him “Johnny Baseball.”
When he joined his little league team, he became a star.
Like Pete Rose or Babe Ruth,
he could swing and hit the ball really far.
He would emulate his favorite baseball heroes
and smack singles, doubles, triples, and home runs.
Like Babe Ruth, he’d try and point where he thought he’d hit it,
‘cause he was just having fun.
They’d try and keep him guessing
with the pitcher pitching curve balls, change-ups, and fast,
You couldn’t keep him off balance
because he’d get hot and smoke the ball at last.
The right fielder would go back, way back,
but it was gone over the wall today.
Johnny also knew how to stroke the ball
and get it into play.
He seemed to already know where and when,
And he’d hit it again and again.
He had many fans, and he was exciting to watch
as they’d cheer him in the stands.
He could also field with the best of them
and had a strong arm, which was in high demand.
The legend of “Johnny Baseball” lives on,
a starter all year long.
He packed excitement into a game
‘cause, for a ten-year-old, he was playing very strong.
