The Quiet Hero of the Cafeteria
by Victoria Cardona
Every lunch period, Eli was the last one to leave the cafeteria. Most students would rush to recess to burn off their energy, but Eli would stay behind. This wasn’t because he was in any sort of trouble. He just liked to help clean up. He wiped the tables with careful strokes, stacking lunch trays and pushing in the chairs, even if he didn’t make the mess himself. Nobody asked him to do it. Actually, almost no one noticed. Until one day, his classmate, Lucy, watched him from the hallway.
“Why do you do that?” she asked.
Eli shrugged. “I don’t know. It just feels right. Jesus washed feet, remember?”
The next day, Lucy stayed to help Eli instead of going to recess. Soon, a small group from school started to help clean up the cafeteria mess. They did not see this as work; they saw it as lending a helping hand and making the cafeteria cleaner for the next group of kids to enjoy. The group even gave themselves a secret name: “the table team.”
One day, the principal made an announcement at the school assembly. “We have discovered heroes in our midst. A few students stay after lunch every day without seeking praise or attention.” The principal smiled, turned to Eli, and asked him to stand up. Eli’s face turned red as a tomato. He smiled shyly as everyone clapped for him, before he quickly sat back down.
After school, Lucy said, “You’re famous now, like a school celebrity.”
Eli just chuckled, saying, “I did not want to be famous. I just want the lunchroom to be clean for the next class and help the cafeteria workers.”
Question for Reflection:
Have you ever helped without being asked? Think of something you can do today — an act of kindness, in service for others — even if no one sees it.
Matthew 6:4 (NKJV): “that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”
