The LORD Is My Kelper

by Marcia N. Lynch

In my black wetsuit and fins
I entered a mustard forest,
Thousands of rubbery tongues
Were swaying with the current.
Never leaving their foothold,
Their roots on the sandy floor,
Bending in joyful surrender
To the will of their ocean home.
Drawn seaward then pulled shoreward,
Flowing in ceaseless prayer,
Echoing call and response,
They worshipped without a care.
As I floated among them,
Feeling the ebb and flow
I wished I had more elbows
So I could curl and fold —
Could dance in perfect unison
With them, and the will of Him
Who gave this ocean parable
To me, in my wetsuit and fins.
