Joy

by Paul Van Peenen

It might be the canopy of stars
Or the scoop of throat-soothing ice cream
Or the discovery of a tiny, iridescent frog

It might be the flowering hydrangeas
Or the five spot lying in the mall parking lot
Or the extra helping of homemade lasagna

It might be the sudden rainbow
Or the sweet topspin backhand winner
Or the birthday surprise after a long school day

It might be a new poetry collection
Or a timely Get Out Of Jail Free card
Or a casual acquaintance becoming a good friend

But, for whatever it is and whenever it comes
And for however long: Thank God.
