Gus Was a Shy Firefly
by Marcia N. Lynch
Gus was a shy firefly
Who didn’t want to shine,
He found the neon lights absurd —
Those bulbs on flies’ behinds.
He wanted just a quiet life,
Perhaps a leaf to munch.
He wouldn’t join the flashy crowd
And streak with that loud bunch.
But then one night, he spotted her
While flying in the dark.
She looked so lost and all alone,
Without even a spark
Of light to help her find her way.
So, Gus began to shine!
He lit the trail for her to see,
There was nowhere to hide
His blinking heart of happiness
While flying by her side.
They built a leafy home of love
And shared the glow inside,
And now two little fireflies
Light up the evening skies.
